Traditional Braces in Oakville

Braces for Teens & Children

Traditional braces, whether composed of metal or ceramic brackets, often rely on metal or elastic bands to aid in realignment. However, these bands can generate friction between teeth and accumulate bacteria and plaque. Unlike the Pitts 21™ System, traditional braces may be more challenging to clean. Additionally, certain types of traditional braces may cause a greater sensation of pressure during wear due to the increased force applied to shift teeth. Nonetheless, traditional braces have evolved over time to enhance treatment efficiency and comfort. The choice between traditional braces and the Pitts 21™ System depends on factors such as the severity of orthodontic issues and the patient’s unique treatment objectives.

Addressing Orthodontic Issues

Teenage years are often the ideal time for orthodontic treatment because most of the permanent teeth have erupted, but the jaw is still growing. This allows orthodontists to effectively address common issues such as overcrowding, crooked teeth, bite problems, and misalignments.

Boosting Confidence

Adolescence is a time when self-esteem and confidence are particularly important. Orthodontic treatment can help teenagers feel more confident about their smiles by correcting aesthetic issues and improving dental alignment.

Improving Oral Health

Straightening teeth and correcting bite problems through orthodontic treatment can improve oral health in the long term. Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems.

Preventing Future Complications

Addressing orthodontic issues during the teenage years can prevent more severe problems from developing later in life. By aligning teeth and jaws properly, orthodontic treatment can reduce the likelihood of issues such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and tooth wear.

Improving Facial Symmetry

Early treatment can help improve facial symmetry by guiding the growth of the jaws and aligning the teeth properly. This can enhance the overall appearance of the face and smile.

Options for Personalization

Teenagers have a variety of orthodontic treatment options available to them, including metal braces, clear braces, and clear aligners (such as Invisalign Teen). Orthodontists can work with teenagers to choose the treatment option that best fits their lifestyle, preferences, and treatment goals.

Using braces to treat problems with bite, overcrowding and other issues can reduce the risk of poor oral and overall health in the future, in addition to jaw pain, muscle stiffness and chipped teeth.

Both the Pitts 21™ System and traditional braces can address concerns such as tooth gaps, overcrowding, misalignment, and bite irregularities.

Why braces for kids?

While clear aligners may not be suitable for every child, traditional braces offer an effective solution to straighten teeth and prevent future oral health issues stemming from misalignment. With traditional braces, we can align teeth correctly to facilitate improved brushing and flossing, reducing the risk of gum disease. Chewing capabilities can also become enhanced, aiding digestion. Braces for kids can alleviate jaw pain and muscle stiffness caused by misaligned bites, and even prevent eventual bone erosion resulting from gaps between teeth or from congenitally missing teeth (teeth missing since birth). Treatment with braces can boost a kid's self-confidence and self-image, but the benefits extend beyond aesthetics. A straighter, more even smile supports long-term oral health. At Hart Orthodontics, our orthodontic treatment for kids focuses on correcting bite functionality and comfort, aligning teeth properly, and enhancing aesthetics.

How Kids Braces Work

Braces for kids play a vital role in a proactive approach to their oral health, addressing current issues while also preventing potential future complications with their teeth, mouth, and jaw. Dr. Hart commonly recommends braces for children with crowded, crooked, or misaligned teeth, as well as conditions like crossbite, overbite, or underbite. Each tooth receives a bracket, linked by a wire that spans across the row of teeth. In some cases, elastic bands are used, connecting brackets between upper and lower teeth to gradually guide them into their proper positions. Typically, this process spans about 2 years, during which your child will visit the orthodontist for wire adjustments every 6 to 8 weeks. This meticulous approach ensures the best outcome for your child's orthodontic journey.
